Hello, Yves. Yes, they need partial sun (4 hours or less) to bloom well but they can also do that in areas with bright indirect light. They will not bloom well in deep shade.

For example, I have three red camellias, some azaleas and hydrangeas in the north side of my house, where they all get shade most of the time in the summer. They also get enough bright indirect light so all of them bloom well.

If you are concerned, drive around your town looking for others who have camellias or ask your local nurseries. Observe where and how they plant camellias. Here in the States, most large universities have lots of information in websites so you check your universities too.

I am more concerned about the soil being, as you say, very moist or wet. Moist is fine; wet is not. Most plants will fare poorly in areas where the soil is wet. A high level of moisture causes development of fungal infections that will make the plants develop root rot and then die.

Your weather should be temperate, rainy and good enough to grow camellias outside in homes. Your zone should be equivalent to mine (USDA Zone 7 or 8) but obviously more rainy and less warm. That is ideal for most growing most camellia japonicas/sasanquas varieties. Check what varieties are recommended by your local Camellia Society; see the link below.

thank you for your quick reply. As you described it, I think the place might be suited for camellias. There is already an azalea growing and it blooms well so that is ok I guess. As for the soil, it is moist and one part is wet but we discovered that our neighbour might have a water leak in his house just at that spot so that will hopefully be fixed soon. Then it will be just moist.
Our climate is temperate with plenty of rain all year round. No extremes in temperature or rainfall (although the occasional heatwave in summer).
