Canna are all dried out??

Help??

this is my first year with Cannas...I have stored some , for the winter, and i peeked at them the other day..and they are kind of dried out...is this normal? i wrapped them in newspaper, and put them in a cardboard box in a dark closet around 60-65 degrees...did i do something wrong??

I lost a lot of smallish size and med size tubers last winter.Several people incl Martha stewart recommended the bare root storage. It was a real bummer too.

This year I tried storage in barely moist peat moss SEALED in plastic bags and I have to say I'm sold with this method. The tubers never went fully dormant- they are produciong long white roots and some have even started sprouting. I was especially pleased to see some puny trades - about an inch square- are alive- just for curiousity I potted one in the house and it's coming up.

I have giant rhizomes like one I believe is 'red stripe' that do fine stored as you have- but for the smaller ones I'd go with peat next year- IMHO
