The Heat

What are your brugs doing in the heat?

What kind of heat are you having?

Last summer when I was seriously growing brugs-over 100 varieties and seedlings- most of my brugs stopped blooming when we got into the 100's- well actually, all of them did but Adora, Temple Goddess and Milk & Honey kept going right up to nearly 100*.

So, this year, I have even more brugs. I noticed that altho my brugs have y'd in many cases, no signs of buds- none. And yet other brugs, like Ecuador Pink and my orange seedlings are going strong. The ones with y's and no buds do keep right on growing and y-ing till cooler weather and then, what a show! All those y's suddenly get with the program and produce buds and you can have a first flush in September/October with 100's of blossoms.

And I have also noticed buds dropping. Here I thought I was going to have a blossom on Pink Perfektion and darn if the bud did not drop off and our weather has not gone back up to 100 since last month. Touchy about the heat. So, this one is going to be a September and October flusher.

None of my cuttings have gotten big enough to flower, but my noid pink and noid white have flowered. Sad to say that my noid pink (poss. Frosty Pink) had all these buds and then the heat set in. The buds didn't open up all the way and they dried up that way :-( I have a few more blooms on my noid white, but nothing like last year. My shredded white lost all it's leaves and the few buds it had, and my double white only has one flower that hung on. Hopefully when the weather starts cooling down a bit, I'll get a good flush on them. Good to know which brugs can take the heat.

Mine are looking and performing just as yours are....not
as pretty as last year but ok. I know for sure that eight
-10 of mine are in tooooo much sun. Oh well...too much
work to pot or move them now. The potted ones on the deck
are doing better after I'm watering them twice a day when
I need to. I guess most of us are just waiting for that BIG flush.

The heat has become pretty intense and I'm having to water the brugs daily but we're still having frequent downpours so that helps. We were getting too much rain until recently and I was having a problem with yellowing foliage. All in all they are doing pretty good and I'm not getting the deformed blooms that I had last season because of the heat and drought we experienced. The one concern that I am having is mold. Even though it's in the 90's during the day it can drop to the low 60's at night. The moisture combined with the cool evening temps can be a problem. I'm trying to keep up with removing the dropped foliage and debris from around the plants.

heat? rain? where? lol. it's just been overcast and 70s for what seemed like forever. I'm so sick of it. yesterday may have hit 80, the brugs seemed to like that.

I'm so excited, inca sun bloomed once last week and now has a dozen+ buds on it, two of which have burst their calyx, and the others are close behind. supernova's sporting two huge buds, the flower part of which have descended about SEVEN inches. (whhaaatt?! I've only had little inca sun put on a show for me. AM I PREPARED FOR THIS?) does that 18 inch claim include the calyx? it HAS to. they're already impossibly huge! I've got two noids and a frosty pink with inch long buds, and a couple others putting out TINY buds for the first time. this is so cool. I'm gonna toss up some pictures later.

The Brugs that were so heavily infested with aphids earlier this spring are not recovering well. They are putting out sparse small leaves. None have bloomed.
Adora is a charming FUSSBUDGET!! She is fussy about where she sits. (container growing) Move her 12 inches down the row and she starts growing like mad. Let the temps get hot, cool, or damp and she deforms her blooms, refuses to open them, or just drops them. Grrr. Strawberry Creme is still growing tall. No Ys. It's over five feet and one single trunk! My variegated Brugs are doing the best of them all. And I thought they would be the hardest to keep alive. This heat is taking its toll. Gloria

Most of mine are doing pretty well other than shooting star. I killed mine and a cutting I got. I think its a weak one. The daydreams is not doing well either keeps having funky leaves. I need to go cut off damaged leaves on everything when it cools off some. Haven't had rain but once in I don't know how long but water every day sometimes twice a day. The ones in more shade are doing best. I killed all my variegated ones. They just don't like it here.

Try 2 months without rain and temps 90+ everyday and all of this on sand with Oak trees. Basically you must water the oaks or it will suck every ounce of water from the plant. I am sure glad I am on a well or my water bill would be $ 2,000.00 + a month.

Only thing doing well is my Dats my Inoxia is the fastest growing plant I have ever seen. Just 90 more days until we get a break.

I know how you feel Jim but I am on city water so I am scared to get my bill this month. I was just outside and it was sprinkling! Amen, lol. I hope it pours for a little while we really need it. My neighbor has only registered a half inch of rain in the last 3 months.

Your weather sounds like ours last season. We had the worst drought in something like 75 years and this year we had a record amount of rain. Go figure. The pollution is catching up with us. My plants looked ok last season because I had an $1800 water bill! I thought I was going to have a heart attack when I saw that. If the drought had continued into this year I'd have had a whole bunch of dead plants. I hope you all get some good soaking rains soon.

I didn't mind the heat until the last few days. Then when we had high humidity & rain. They were either being cooked in the sun or drowning from all the rain. The sangs were a lot happier when it was cool but they are on my front porch where they are shaded most of the day. It has showered on & off but I have still had to water quite a few days. It rains just enough to be too wet to work & then the sun comes out. All I did was run in & out trying to get it all done before the real heat hits in July & Aug. I have almost all the brugs in the ground with about another dozen from the last batch of seedlings to get in. I need to spray with the anti stress.

Yeah, the heat is rough- I feel for my plants when I look out at my gardens in 100+ temps and I'm all comfy @ 78, inside, you better believe it!!! We are getting a break now, in mid-80's after the horrible week of near 100's of a month ago- what the heck was that???

So, Jim, what happens in 90 days?

Karyn1 is that water bill from only one month and did it include the green house (do I have the right person that your husband sells flowers). I really feel for you guys on city water. cindy

Brenda we start to cool down. Might even see a random cool front in October. When the wind switches from the north we drop our humidity from 90+ to about 40 % .

I just started my summer strip of leaves. It is no use to try and keep them as they are mite magnets and July is my schedule spray of Forbid. Summer is pretty ugly here for many plants.

I do have some new ones for summer color and the crazy cannas,Plumeria, four O CLOCKS, daturas,Oleanders and esperanza like it hot. So the brugs get to take a break. Fall is their happy time.

I hope those of you with the exterme heat and dryness get some rain soon. I know we had dry weather here last year and were on wated advisories. I can't complain this year, we are getting a pretty good balance of rainy days and nice days.
