I'm assuming the sprout is coming out of the big black seed, yes? In that case, the sprout is the actual plant, so plant the seed with the sprout sticking out of the soil.

You can also put it in water and let it continue to grow until bigger.

As I understand it the "sprout" is the radicle, which is the embryonic root. So it should be planted downwards into the soil.

The first thing to emerge from the seed is a root, which at that stage is called a radicle. It needs to be in the soil. If you put that part up into the air, it will dry out.
