squirrels made off with my canna bulbs!

Have you ever herd of squirrels eating cannas? I planted some and they have disappeared. I noticed that one of my irises was dug up this morning. What should I do? I have alot of squirrels in my yard and I wouldn't want to harm them.

I never had a squirrel eat a Canna before. They have tried digging my Canna's up and every once in awhile they destroy some leaves. The only thing I could think of is stake chicken wire over the bed to stop them from digging. I think I also read somewhere blood meal stops them from digging not sure if it works.
