Planting garlic among your lettuce is a good way to create diversity in your garden and thereby making it trickier for pests to find their host plants.

When you harvest your lettuce, you'll cut them off cleanly from the soil with a sharp knife. You won't be pulling your lettuce.

And your lettuce should all be harvested by the time you yank the garlic mature heads.

Thanks, Joe. But I grow lettuce all year long, and so I have to remove it because it eventually bolts, but the roots are not all that small. I guess I was just realizing for the first time that all the roots need to be rather close to each other to exchange the good things they do for each other, so perhaps with a bit of distance, maybe 6 inches, the garlic would be willing to hold steady with the occasional shift in companions :)
