Dwarf Nandina?

Could it be Loropetalum chinense - Razzle berry. There are dwarf red cultivars that stay mounded and small.

Or Photinia?

Nandina is right, I think. The dwarf variety looks great in the winter. Of course they're not red in the spring and summer...they'll shed the red foliage when they leaf out. They make a good alternative to burning bush.

Jim -- deer will munch loropetalum, if they are a concern at your house.

Ha! They are most definately a concern. They must be hungrier this year than before, because they're eating foliage of my small maples and a hybrid azalia. They've always gone for my Camellias and golden Euonymus, and soon I'm gonna have to put something up around those guys...they're about stripped of leaves.

My deer eat loropetalum, photinia, euonymus, and nandina. Aren't azaelias always leafless?

Funny, my deer have never tried the loropetalum. I consider myself lucky because they've tried everything else.

Keep your deer close to home, Brenda. My herd doesn't care for lorapetalum and I don't want them getting any ideas.

As you know, my deer are your deer, Karen. And our deer only like the more exotic, expensive varieties of my loropetalum - none of that stuff I rooted from a twig from a stripmall parking lot - they only go for named cultivars - tasteful vermin.

Then I want that exotic lorapetalum that's been genetically engineered to provide birth control. Should be doable, what other mammal eats lorapetalum?

The cultivar of loropetalum I'm thinking of that I grow that has the red leaves and grows fairly fast (pink blooms in the spring) is called "Zhou Zou."

Mine was like 18" tall when I planted it 4 or 5 years ago, and without much watering or fertilizing it's now about 7 feet tall and 5 feet wide... lovely bush!
