I don't think any of the named _Forsythia_ cultivars measure up to the beauty of the old, generic "golden bell(s)" forsythia that has been grown in Southern gardens for generations. To me, the old-fashioned form has a delicate beauty that is lacking in the named cultivars. Regrettably, some of the named cultivars look as if they're on steroids. The flowers of some of the named cultivars are a strong, offensive shade of yellow--entirely too bold. On the other hand, the old-fashioned form is pretty in flower and out of flower; in leaf and out-of-leaf. It makes a beautiful leafless accent in the winter garden and in Zone 7B is in flower in early March.
