Have never tested mine and i've been in this house for 39 years.I just take whatever nature gives me.After all do you see people out in the meadows and country side testing soil?? I don't.My theory is "you win some, you lose some.

I have to agree with Kathi, I've never tested my soil either. I don't grow a lot of vegetables, which would tend to deplete the nutrients, and I'm not too anal about cleaning leaves or debris (deadheads, twigs) and I fertilize occasionally with an organic fertilizer.

I had it tested when we bought the property in 1987. Low only in nitrogen with a PH of 6.5. I have only used fertilizer on the lawn. Everything else gets compost and the lawn will also when I get around to aireating it. Al

When you get your soil tested, what are the parameters? What are you looking for?

We've never had our soil tested, but we've amended it plenty (FirMulch, typically) in beds where we've sown flowers or added shrubs.

You should tell the lab what you wish to grow so they can council you on your soil. Talk to the lab before collecting the test soil to get their directions. If you want every possible test done it can cost hundred of dollars and be a waste of money. A basic test costs around $30 and gives you all you need to know about your soil. mrandmsgreengenes something other than zone 17 would help us know where you are gardening and allow more local information to be offered.
