Your zone specific questions take longer to attract helpful responses because there seems to be fewer GardenWeb
users from your area.
Talk up the site, that's the only way to attract gardeners from your area to this site.

I have a place in WNC at 5,000', but most of what I have up there is all native, and very late ...end of May...to come up.

I did plant the non-native candy tuff 18 years ago, and it has been going strong ever since. Hostas do well but are late coming up. Day lilies are also OK, but the repeat bloomers don't have time to repeat...short growing season.

My neighbors planted some vegetables, and they did well, but they had to fence them away from the animals. I am not sure if they used seed or starts.

Thank you for the responses. What a great forum and great way to get in touch with other growers. Hopefully with more exploring of these forums I can use them to my benefit and maybe the benefit of some others. I like the east tenn and virginia idea. Thanks guys!

If you were interested in veggies there is a wonderful list of planting dates for central NC. At the bottom of this list, it says to delay planting for 2 to 3 weeks for mountain areas. The sheet is from Watt Quarals seed co.

Andrew, Im glad you were able to get the link. Watt-Quarls is a local seed co I think. They pass out hard copies of that sheet in central NC (at least in the local garden store I go to). I use it every year.

You might want to ask one of your neighbors when they put in their beans to fine tune the timing for your area.
