For hardy & no fuss annuals, I've always liked zinnias, marigolds and the small geraniums planted in groups. They will handle the dry, hot summer. The zinnias and marigold come in a few colors and heights so you are not limited to yellow and orange. I've had good luck with these from seeds. Also more choices from seed. All are readily available at any big box or garden center...a little later in the spring. Also, the critters tend to leave them alone. Good luck and happy summer.

There are TONS of annuals for you to choose from... have fun! Anyways, I've had good results with Vinca, and supertunias (petunias that don't turn to mush in the rain). I'd suggest mixing in some garden soil... You can also get both of these plants at those big box stores. Let us know what you choose, and how they turn out!

I have also had great success with Lantana and Wax Begonias in the clay of NC. I had good success incorporating peat into the clay. Compost would help too, and can be spread over the entire bed. The shrubs will thank you for it.
