volunteer hydrangeas?!

while clearing out the area around my four hydrangeas (each is in a planter box), i noticed that three of them had branches that touched the ground. it appears that these branches have started growing on their own and are becoming independent hydrangeas. i'm guessing that i should be able to separate them from the mother plants and place them in a newer area in my garden ... ?

This is natural layering, and they should be fine if severed and planted separately, with a little care in the first year. I'd probably be inclined to pot them, rather than planting them out directly, just to allow them to form a complete root system first, but it could be done either way.

thanks, bubba! i'm on an extreme budget and love the fact that i'm getting more hydrangeas free of charge! i'll pot them up as you suggest and treat 'em real nice! :)
