Grass dying...what to do?

Hi. I'm new posting to this forum. I have been lurking and found lots of helpful information. I need some advice.

I planted a row of Leyland Cyprus trees for privacy along the back west border of my lot about 10 or more years ago. Now the grass in front of them (about a 10' x 80') section has died.

I'm not sure if it is from being shaded or the trees are taking all of the moisture and nutrients from the grass. It gets morning sun until around 2 p.m.

Does anyone have a suggestion of what I might plant there?

Maybe a ground cover, or flower? I don't know much about ground covers but I don't want something that will constantly have to be pulled from climbing up the trees. Thanks in advance for any suggestions
