Spring onion weeds?

I recently moved into a house in Sonoma County. The yard had been neglected for many months and was very overgrown and filled with leaves. I had a lawn service clean it up about a month ago.

Within the last week or so, I suddenly have what appear to be spring onions popping up all over the place. They have a green grass-like stalk and white bulb. They smell like onions.

Why would they suddenly appear now? The onions weren't there before after months of neglect. How can I get rid of them and keep them away?
