I did the same research and ended up choosing a Chinese Pistachio too. They are hard to find in the trade because they start out as unattractive trees (basically sticks) so garden shops have a hard time moving them. I have a friend who brokers plants and has a tree farm and I got my 4 ft tree from him last fall. Let me see if he still has one that he could sell you. It may take me a week or so to talk to him I have to go to Raleigh to the garden shop he works at to talk to him. Have you googled the tree name in the N & O? There is a good article about them in that paper which praises the plant which is funny since no one carries it....here it is.

Great tree around here, but not used very much for the reason stacette gives...it's a bit awkward as a youth (much like us humans). Turns into a really nice shade tree with a little time. Has some of the best fall color you'll find anywhere. Also doesn't get really large like many shade trees, but grows into a nice-sized tree (35-40' tall with time). If you shop at a reputable garden shop, ask them if they can order it for you. You may have to call a grower direct and get it as a b&b.

Thanks so much for your responses... Have to admit I'm a bit disappointed in their availability. Oh how I love instant gratification!! I'm on vacation this week and wanted to get it into the ground tomorrow! LOL

For anyone in Charlotte, you can see them used as street trees along Kenilworth between Morehead and East Blvd in Dilworth...they're on the west side of the street. You'll see their awkward shape, nice open fluffy canopy, and (for fall viewing) GREAT fall color. One of my favorite trees...just wish someone could develop an improved cultivar for consistent form/structure.
