Purchased from Lowes

Saturday I was at Lowes doing some shopping and they had their roses in and also several Clematis. I just purchased my first every Clematis's last year and they have been growing out in 3 gal pots since last year and are looking very good. Roots are coming out of the bottom of the pots and all did bloom last year. I plan to plant all the ones I got last year in the next couple weeks in the ground. I got 2 Ramona, 2 Sprinkles,one Dr. Ruppel, which I think i'll leave in a large pot that I have it in on the back porch, and I also have 3 Jackmanii and one SAC. Anyway the one I picked up on Saturday at Lowes was a Ernest Markham and the package was nice and big and I thought ok maybe the plant will have a some size to it. NOT so much.. When I got home and openned the plastic bag there was the saddest little green spout and the was a plant about the size of a tooth pick. To my surprise I found 2 in one bag. The bag stated one. The bag was full of dirt and I thought maybe the plant had some size to it but it was very small. What surprised me was the roots system was pretty large really much more than I expected to find. I planted each root system in their own 3 gal pot and will see what becomes of them. Oh the box stated 2 years on the box. Does that refur to the plant being 2 years old? I left them outside with a 5 gal bucket over the top of each pot for warmth. Still very cold here in middle Tenn. Sandy

Sandy...great idea on planting the ones you grew out in pots last year...once the roots come out of the bottom..that is a sure sign they are ready ...they will go gangbuster..just remember to plant them 2-4 inches deeper in your garden at a slight 45 degree angle towards what you want it to climb on...Sounds to me what you bought are called 2 yr old bareroots (Supposedly they are 2 years old..mine said the same..I seriously doubted as it took forever to get established..that is why I never buy bareroot clematis anymore) ..those will need to be grown in the pots till the roots come out of the bottom too!!..remember to keep them moist..and remember to always soak any bareroot before you plant to hydrate it...My bareroot "Rosemoor" is now 4 years old..I am hoping this will be it's leap year...Jeanne

Thanks Jeanne.. I plan to plant my last years clematis's on the trellis's I posted a couple months ago, the ones I made from the stock panels and with the bench I made last summer sitting under it. I can't wait until spring when I can sit there with a glass of wine with clematis's growing all around me, probably get stung by a bee but It will be worth it. Your plants you post are always such a joy to view. I can only dream that mine some day will be the beauties that yours have become. Sandy

Thanks Sandy..I look forward to seeing pics of your newly planted clematis this year!!..don't forget to give them all their goodies!! A lot of mine will be 3 years old this year since my home is new..so I am expecting and anticipating a wonderful LEAP-YEAR!!..WOohoo...Jeanne
