I suggest buying larger pots and keeping them--the pots needn't be expensive. You could get old discarded plastic nursery pots at some of the nurseries in your area. I have several that are 10 or 20 gallon sized pots from old plants that I have purchased in the past. Check your local nurseries for any they are willing to give you or sell to you at a cheap price. I definitely wouldn't keep them in the same pots for the next two years if you are already seeing roots at the bottom of the drainage holes.

Your idea is good, because you will indeed have nice mature plants. With my long projected move, that's what I have done with many of my clems and other plants, though most are still awaiting their final planting position ... so much work ahead, but I'll have strong established plants ...

If you can't get your hands on inexpensive pots, I'd see if you could get a couple of those large commercial ice cream buckets from an ice cream parlor. They're nice and deep and should be able to contain your plants for a couple years. Make sure you put some holes in the bottom for drainage. I'd sink the buckets in a garden space if available. Even cat litter buckets would work. Or food buckets that restaurants get pickles etc in. If your town has "cleanup days" a little drive around may find all sorts of suitable containers. I even cut the top half off a plastic garbage can that was cracked on top to plant a couple of clems in.

Thank you for all of the suggestions! I think I'm going to wait a little longer just to make sure I didn't kill them this winter (I put them in a polebarn and forgot to water them!) before I pot them up. I love this forum...such expertise that is freely shared!!
