Morning sun is fine.
The more shade, the better really.
If you can plant it in shade. it will have much nicer foilage.

The deer like them in my yard.

And voles like to eat them also so plant them where you can protect them. Mine gets direct sun in the morning until around noon and then shade and it does fine but has been slow growing (I could probably water it more).

Ditto the comment about the deer issue. I have to grow them containerized and on my top deck to prevent the deer from eating them. Shade is not a problem though.

geebee, is your light situation because of an absence of shade trees or the trees you have are young and short?

Actually, I live in a new home where they've taken down most of the trees to build the home! I do have a Magnolia Little Gem in the front yard about 7 ft tall, and in the back NOTHING!!! One home on the East side has several trees that shade about 50% in the back til noon. Nothing beyond worth mentioning. It's almost 6 pm and along the West side about 8 ft of that side is now shaded along the privacy fence, therefore the back yard from about noon on is in very hot sun!!!
