Betty Corning is a group 3 clematis, meaning that it's a late bloomer and it will send up new growth every year from the ground, from which the new blooms will come. Your plant needs planting ASAP ! Betty Corning is a giant sized plant that needs strong supports and a good, rich soiled, deep hole at planting time. Betty C. needs a pruning to about 12" from the ground in late winter, so that the new growth coming from the roots will be the happiest.
A good rose or tomato fertilizer several times during spring and summer will insure a great bloom cycle late season. Cow manure is also of tremendous benefit to clematis. Betty Corning is a scented clematis, most noticable during still days. It's heavenly ! A lovely clematis!

Suzy....how big should I anticipate my Betty Corning to get? Will it devour a large rambler rose like Awakening or New Dawn?

Betty should be fine on a large, mature climbing rose that is very well supported. At maturity, Betty Corning can cover a 7-12 foot trellis with ease. Here is mine, taken a few years ago. This Betty C. is on a 7 ft. obelisk, paired with a purple Polish Spirit (another group 3 type). I may need a bigger obelisk someday, we'll see.....

The one I planted last summer also died completely back, no growth at all from the vines but it is sprouting up from the ground.
