There are so many blue clematis that I couldn't possibly pick a favorite. Last year's charmer was Blue Pirouette. Before that, Blue Boy and Blue Bird. I also love Emilia Plater, Blekitny Aniol, Betty Corning, Arabella, Dominika, Durandii, Petit Faucon and Fryderyk Chopin. These are all subtly different in hue and are from different pruning groups. Make use of this site to find what you feel would work best for your situation. It has recently been updated and offers excellent photos and information.

I think I looking for a lite blue...something like a sky blue or a baby blue.

Blue Angel a/k/a Bletkiny Anoil for light blue (spelling might not be right) and darker blue would be Multiblue.

Thank you every one for your sugestions on the different blue clematis. So far they are all very pretty but I didn't find the one blue color that I'm looking for as of yet. So I'm still looking.

Why is it that some of these Clematis everyone is telling me about look more blue when looking at them on other web sites when I did a web search and when looking at them on Clematis on the Web they look more like a bit purple?? Which is more right in color?? Or is it depend on how much sun they are getting or the weather??

Cameras do funny things with blues and purples. Light changes their color. Location changes their look too. Basically, all are beautiful and in my opinion, none clash.

I do agree they are all very beautiful but when you are looking for one color and get another ..it can be some what disappointing.

I can understand that a camera can change the color and I thought it might have something to do with weather too but never thought about location making the color look different but it makes sense.

I love the blue color of your Blekitny Aniol...that is so pretty!!!! The rest of your Clematis are also so very pretty!!!

Well certainly what you pair a flower with affects the colour. How much shade it gets, what is in the background (pine trees? red roses? a yellow brick house?), what colours you choose to go with it too (different blues? whites? purples? pink? yellow?). A white clematis glows in the evening, so think about what times you are likely to be in the garden to enjoy them. If you are there after work or after dinner, pale ones like Blekitny Aniol or Huldine work well. It is also nice to mix shapes of bloom, such as Roguchi with Juuli. (These two are different heights, but scramble through a wildish garden of mine.) It is lots of fun to play with all of this and should not create anxiety. ;-)

Gardenbug, I like Roguchi and that is on my list to get. The blue I'm looking for is going to have a gray brick back ground. It will get only morning sun and the bight shade the rest of the day. I have nothing growing where it is going to be and my house is tall so I thought a vine would look nice there. I don't want a real dark blue clematis there.

I found a picture of Silmakivi in the gallery and so far I like that one. I'm not crazy about yellow centers but it is a pretty flower so maybe I look to see if I can find one.

I do not grow Silmakivi and can give no advice on this one. You might read up on it on the Hull site. Although they say "any aspect", my experience in North America is that usually the more sun, the more blooms. I do not grow that many group 2 clematis and cannot say how this one will deal with morning sun only in your area.

Gardenbug, What Group do you grow?? Is there a reason you don't grow many Group 2 Clematis? I've just learning there are different Groups. I only have grown The President and have grown it for 17 years. I've never did anything to it and it always had ton of blooms. I had just moved it last year and cut it in half.

I can grow Silmakivi in another spot ..that won't be a problem at all but then which Clematis do well with only moring sun till earlier afternoon??

So far on my list I am getting Ramona, Roguchi and Claire De Lune.

Hi Lady B take a look at Fujimusume one of the best sky blue clematis.Belle Nantaise, Lady Caroline Nevill,Sho Un,and Chalcedony are all beautiful light blue's.Chalcedony is an ice blue

My fav is Royalty - everblooming- double blooms on the old wood and single flowers on new wood.

I have a "Perle D Azure" planted by the front porch which faces East and I train it to grow up over the eave of the house and it is gorgeous. It blooms profusely early and then off and on again throughout the Summer. It grows at least 15 feet and is a soft blue and everyone asks me what this plant is. I always keep my Clematis roots cool by placing a rock or stepping stone over the root area. They also like lime placed in the hole when planting. Suzanne

ladybutterfly , you asked what clematis group I grow. I grow them all (almost) but prefer groups 1 and 3 rather than the huge blooms. It is a matter of personal taste, but I do grow a few larger ones that won my heart. :-) I find that in my climate the pruning of group 3s makes life easiest for me and that they are not likely to suffer from mildew and wilt as much as group 2s.

Sunnyday@day, I seen that yesterday over at Gardenbuggies. I had just join Gardenbuggies a few days ago. Do you grow Silmakivi in full sun or part shade?? Does yours get any purple in it or is it just real blue??

Jeanne, I've seen more pictures of H F Young and saw what a very pretty blue it is and decided I had to have. Do you grow your in full sun or part shade??

Silmakivi gets dappled shade and dappled sun and seems to like it that way. I consider this a nice lilac blue. Jeanne and I agree on the darker ones...Rhapsody is a wonderful darker blue and so is Ken Donson. I like your choices. Ingmarie grows one called Ice Maiden...it is sooo pretty but not in the U.S. as far as I know (yet.)

Zoe..it gets only part day of sun...and you will love it...quite a beautiful shade of blue and vigorous in my gardens...congrats on your selection..Jeanne

I'm also going to be adding Fryderk Chopin to my list. It is a gray/blue. I'm also thinking of Ekstra but I haven't decided if I will get that one or not.

Sunnyday, I did look at the two darker blues and they are pretty. I been thinking where in my garden I would like to put a darker one at but so far I haven't found a place.

I did look at Ice Maiden and that is pretty!!
I would like Miranda but it isn't available yet. Miranda is a very dark purple with a dark center. From what I read it is a darker form of Arabella. I would like to find something that looks like it in a group 2.

Multiblue is a pretty one and it is very blue.

@justjill, I asked about true blue clematis when I first was bitten by the clematis bug and was told that there aren’t any true blue clematis. They all are blue-purple or periwinkle, not a true blue like a few select types of Veronicas or poppies or delphiniums. Or even the true light blue of forget-me-nots or bluets. It is now a dozen years on and I have a huge number of clematis, many of which are “blue” but in reality none are really true blue. All are lovely and there are different amounts of blue to the periwinkles, and the exact shade of blue-purple often varies with the changing light over the course of the day, but no true blue.
