Orange Flower ID

Haven't been here in a while. Hope y'all are doing well, as are your gardens!!

Customer brought an orange flower into Lowes for ID. No one could ID it. Never saw it before in my life, but the very next day, there it was again beside a pool in Wilmington, still no identifiers.

Here goes: It's a woody shrub with bright orange, hard waxy "berries" that open to form a "star" that holds a medium size ruffly orange flower with a yellow center. One flower on the end of each branch.

It's hardy b/c it's growing outside a doc's office in Sanford.

Pomegranite, Punica sp. There are single forms and double forms.

Maybe. The star thingy makes me think pomegranite.

That's it, John. This one was a double. Thanks.

The first things I looked up in the books at Lowes were persimmon and pomegranate but the picture must have been bad or the wrong variety.

There is a short and stubby form called 'State Fair' that is a blooming machine. Someone gave one to me and I cherish it. It's just a 3-4 foot tall bush but it is covered with hundreds of orange flowers from early May til early November and by fall it is bent over with small reddish fruit. It would make a great container plant for people that like orange flowers.
