Reads that some of the thefts have happened in broad daylight. Wonder if insurance covers that kind of theft?

The same thing was going on last year in Durham, if my memory is correct. Wonder if the thieves moved to Raleigh? It's just crazy -- and daring! It seems like someone would see them in the act and be suspicious, doesn't it?

A few years ago, I was in Carrboro and saw a woman walking on the sidewalk past the Southern States garden center, reach through the fence, grab a plant and stick it in her tote bag and keep on walking.

As for HO insurance, Dottie ..... maybe - heck, they supposedly cover theft of contents of your car, but given the current economic climate, I suspect many would be wary of filing a claim for lost plants. I know I would. If this continues, I see a world of front yard barberrys, firethorn and prickly hollies on the horizon!

Cameron, whether Durham or otherwise, I also remember a rash of this type of larceny a few years back - it's not a new trick. I think the areas that are feeling the sting are the 'empty all day, street after street' homes - it's not hard for a thief to target them.

I don't worry so much about daylight thefts - my 'hood is peppered w/work at homes and stay at homes, ergo the empty driveway is not the norm.

My car lives in the garage, so I do have an empty driveway, but also have a good mix of full driveways around me and we all come and go on totally unpredictable schedules. I think that's key.

Not just because of plant theft, but just in general, I hope more neighborhood awareness/watch stuff will get traction now. Time for folks to break out of their bubbles!
