Thanks! That's exactly it! I'm used to the Northern, brown version that comes out at night, not during the day. I'm glad to know they're not damaging to my plants at this adult stage.

Oh, my goodness. I haven't seen one of those since I left SC almost 50 years ago! When I was young, the guys used to catch them and tie a string to one of the legs to see them fly around in circles! I always thought that was bad, but better than putting the bees in a jar in the freezer and then letting them go and watching them try to fly in slow motion. Sick!

they will damage fruit crops if you have them but not much else. The grubs are just like jap beetle grubs or masked chafers (brown june bug), though, in that they damage lawns & roots.
