How big were the bulbs when you got them? Mine took a year I think but the bulbs were pretty big. They're on the west side of the house, but there's a wooded area across from them so they really don't get a lot of direct sun, but plenty of light. They bloom like crazy! They're in same bed as crinums, elephant ears and hardy amaryllis. The bed is pretty dry too as it's under the overhang from the house and they get a lot of heat from the driveway next to the bed.

When I bought them they were only about 3" diameter bulbs. So I guess that's pretty small then. They face SW with afternoon sun. Maybe I need to either wait until they are up to size or move them to a more shaded area. How deep do you have yours planted? Do you overwinter them in the ground?

Yes, I've been overwintering them in the ground for at least 5 years. I do put a mulch over them 'most' winters, but they seem pretty tough and I'm zone 7a, so colder than you. I planted them about the same as the amaryllis and crinums, so not deep at all, tops are not but maybe and inch or two down. Which is why I mulched them real good the first few years. Now I don't even worry about mulching except to protect the elephant ears. Like I said before though that's a pretty dry bed especially in the winter, so the cold (and rot) isn't as big an issue for them.

I've had 3 inch bulbs bloom, but the flowers were smaller that first year. But I would think that they are large enough, something else must be going wrong.

I've only grown them in pots - mostly to protect them from voles. I grow Sulfur Queen which is a hybrid.

In general in this group of bulbs - every cluster of four leaves makes one bloom stalk. If your leaves look healthy and you have more than four leaves then you should be getting flowers. The only thing I can think of is winter temps - either its too cold for this particular bulb or its not cold enough where you live. You need to find out if anyone near you can get them to bloom in the ground. Around Raleigh they are reliable but eventually they seem to fade away.
