I think a nice rug under the coffee table and coordinating curtains would bring it all together.

I think you did right on the layout. I noticed there is a rug when you enter. I'd take that rug and put it in the living room. Then either get a half round rug by the door when you enter, or a long runner for the hallway. Two large rectangular rugs seem too much. A piece of artwork or mirror next to the book case would work too, although not necessary, since you have a large plant

I also like the layout, and agree that you need a rug. I think it would be best if it was at least as wide as the sofa and extended all the way to under the front part of the easy chair to create a conversation grouping. It will also make the room quieter (there's a lot of wood in there). I would definitely add artwork on both sides of the bookcase for interest and warmth. It's a little sterile now. A floor lamp to the left of the bookcase would also add interest and provide functional, task lighting for the sofa. If you're not in love with the sofa and/or chair color, consider slip-covering one or both of them and getting coordinating pillow covers.

HI -- You have nice things to work with . First get an area rug that is big enough for all your livingroom furniture to sit on . Leave about 18 inches space from walls. Now move the piano onto the left side of the bookcase. Note : get a desk style lamp that has an ajustable arm for the piano. Then the sofa can center at the front window w/ table and lamp on each side . Two matching arm / lounge chairs can sit where the sofa was with a small table between .You may find that there might be room for two smaller accent chairs in your room , if you wish.The area rug at the entrance is fine where it is unless you are changing colors . Find another spot for your small buffet - see if it will fit on the right side of the bookcase w/a picture arrangement or two framed picture on the horizontal or just one larger framed painting and a lamp. You might want this to be the only thing for that end of the sofa. The drapes can be set higher in the bay window up to ceiling of window.Fill the bay top to bottom and side to side and only side panels each side ( not four seperate ones) . Now you need a few hits of a brighter color in the room - some accent pillows and a throw and a few brighter decor items on the bookcase and around the room. Find a nice metal base and glass top coffee table and use the wood one in another room . It's a little more current to not have all the accent tables matching.The accent color (s)you will get from the new area rug. Also find a new place in the house for the faux tree.(they are not really used anymore) Live and fresh flowers always are best for the livingroom.I hope this helps you.

I like the room as it but I agree about adding an area rug. If these ideas don't suit you, or aren't enough change for the restless soul, try moving the book case where the piano is and the piano where the book case is. This change may even increase the acoustics [sound quality] with the higher ceiling height. I use to own a home with that same slope which soared over 20 feet high at the peek. I found that lower items, such as your piano's clean lines, did best against the sloping ceiling, whereas your bookcase will look more "stately" on the shorter wall.

I would also center the sofa to the opening behind it, and shift all items slightly left [2nd photo]. This will give better balance overall to the space and also hide the vent to the [bottom left] dinning room.

I love the piece behind the sofa but in my eyes, I see it refinished to match your bookcase. If the top was sanded, re-stained with the bottom painted, and maybe new hardware I think it would look great. I gave some tags below to show what I mean. I recently had a computer failure and I'm working with a new Apple PC so all my prior bookmarks are lost, but there is one I wish I still had applicable to that piece you have.

You have a beautiful home and great start with solid bones so not much is really needed in my honest opinion.

Yup, first thing is to move your current rug to the sofa area (at least front two feet on the rug). Rug for seating area is your "anchor"! If current rug works, then all the better. But at least you will get an idea for size from the current rug.

I would spring for custom window treatments. You have a window with challenging angles to deal with.

And , nothing adds to a room like a live plant! Costco has pretty inexpensive ones. Do your best to keep alive (don't over water!), but switch out if it looks sick.

You have a great line of site into your dining room. You could do some dramatic wallpaper in there. If you keep your rug: something with black and beige.

I would also, until you decide on new furniture, add new throw pillows to your sofa (to go with rug). Room will be beautiful, you are off to a great start.

I would move the sofa to where the bookcase is. . I would put the bookcase on the wall where the piano is and move the piano to where the chair by the window is. This way the walk from the dining room is more open. And yes, definitely get an area rug to help anchor the room.

Guess one question to ask is how many people would you like to be able to seat in this room?

Okay, I just tried to move the rug to the seating area and it hits the piano leg closest to the door. Obviously, this won't work because the piano is lopsided. If I get the next rug size up, it will be too wide. Any suggestions???

I do plan on getting new furniture for a more updated look. As I mentioned before, I inherited all of the tables.

Honestly, the only time anyone ever sits in the living room is when the piano is being used. So, I probably only need to seat about 4 to 5 people.

flouishfigts....can you move the sofa back enough to accomadate the rug fitting about 6" under the front edge of the sofa? That may give enough room to clear the piano leg.

FYI....I love that rug. I was so torn between that one and the one I ended up with when I put in hardwood floors last year. I went with a different one from same store, "Blue Berries" is the pattern because I wanted to go a little more contemporary/rustic mix. If the Paisley Park is still around in a couple of years, I don't think the current area rug will last more than about 3 - 4 years total, I will probably get the Paisley. So many colors in the pattern for inspiration.

Anyway, try to slide the couch back some more and see if that will give you the room needed for the rug.

Edited: I just took another look at the pictures and I think you could slide the sofa and console back a few inches. Then set the sofa completely on the rug, back feet of sofa just a couple of inches onto the sofa.

Try moving the plant where the arm chair is. Slide the bookcase to where the plant, put the couch on the wall, rug under front legs enough to clear piano bench. Armchair at an angle on the corner of the rug as you enter the room, back toward the foyer. End table could be between sofa and plant, near the window.

Right now you said that the only time you use the room is when someone is playing the piano. Would you like there to be more functions from this room? That being said, not a thing wrong with having a "music room". You could play that aspect up and add a stereo to the room, with a music collection. Be sure there are very comfortable spots to sit with good lighting for reading. Music room/library.

I was thinking that you could place the piano against the long wall, but way up where the plant is shown. Put the tall bookcase where the piano was. Sofa can still enjoy view out the window, only pull it more in that direction. Then your rug should fill up the window area and allow you to set up a nice conversation area anchored by the rug.

Believe me, I know about "formal living rooms", I recently put a desk with a laptop in ours just so the room got used!

I'd paint the bookcase wall a slightly different color for accent. If you love the bookcase, then I'd suggest getting another just like it. Sit the 2 bokcases side by side on that wall where you currently have the one. Then I'd get a large piece of artwork or oversized clock and mount it off center, in the high corner above the bookcase to accentuate the high ceiling. That will ground the space nicely and be a focal point when entering the room.

Like the idea of painting wall accent color. Use what ever rug you use in the space for color inspiration.

Agree that rugs and window treatments would be great. I would put something to delineate the entry from the open room to provide a transition. You could use a bench or console or a built to purpose wardrobe. Agree about plants! They give a room life.
