It wouldn't surprise me being as we practically had a winter to summer transition.

The mornings have really felt like fall. The willow trees are dropping leaves already. The position of the morning sun is on the move. We're very aware of the position since we have a passive solar house. It's like a sun dial for seasons instead of time of day!

Our hummer population just exploded and we added yet another feeder two days ago. We either had some babies here (several females all summer) or some migration from the north already.

The Monarchs are here, but not in the great numbers like last year. Fewer swallowtail BFs, too. However, the skippers are like clouds around the lantana.

It's going to be cooler later in the week. I'm getting the urge to go move plants around, shovel-prune and get some perennials to plant for fall! :-)

the hummers should be leaving this week or they'll miss the train. don't feed them now, let them go to do their thing or they might fall behind

Some adult males start migrating south as early as mid-July, but the peak of southward migration for this species is late August and early September. By mid-September, essentially all of the Ruby-throated at feeders are migrating through from farther north, and not the same individuals seen in the summer. This is difficult to see, since they all look alike, but has been proven by banding studies. The number of birds migrating south may be twice that of the northward trip, since it includes all immature birds that hatched during the summer, as well as surviving adults.

Trees are going into an early fall because of the drought. It's not really a good thing although I am looking forward to cool temps.

This has been one of the cooler summers I can remember. We had hot days but just doesn't seem like we've had as many or as hot as most summers.
