Desert Rose Pruned Trunk.

I bought a desert rose with a VERY tall trunk, above halfway up was a ring of new roots starting to descend, I cut the trunk in half just bellow these new roots so that they now rest in the soil and the base of the plant is much shorter. was this a bad move? I'm worried the damage will over take the plant.
