Our winters aren't cold enough to damage them so you can leave them in the ground BUT, if you really really like the one you have you might consider digging it because voles love to eat them and our winters aren't cold enough to slow them down.

Late last January I noticed some Dahlia tubers with the tops exposed out of the soil. I thought for sure they wouldn't come back since we had some really cold days, but covered them with some wood chip mulch anyway and the came back fine this spring. If you have good drainage where they are the should be fine.

i noticed that one of my dahlias, which bloomed nicely this year, was winding down a month ago. the old stalks fell over and i assumed the plant was done for the season. however, a huge flush of stems is emerging from the roots and now there are beautiful new blooms and strong growth. i'm delighted�"is this happening to anyone else?

Mine are sprouting new growth at their bases after the larger longer stems have flopped over. This year I grew the 'Karma' series which are not supposed to need staking but they did all flop so next year I will prop them up and prune them back mid summer to get a better flush of late season blooms.

I had the tops of some of mine die back this summer and now started resproutong. I don't know how this will affect the size of the tuber for overwintering. The others that I was able to get water to during the summer have done okay and are now putting on a nice show.
