It is not the right time to transplant a lovely pink clematis to the foot of my cotinus 'Grace'. The clematis is (laxly) climbing up a 2 foot stone wall right in back of Grace, and its stems are not long enough to begin to reach the branches. I'm trying to figure out some way to support and guide the stems to help make the foot long leap, and I'm feeling stumped. I tried a stake propped on the top of wall to the cotinus' braches, but that's too unstable and falls down. I thought about tying string to the continus' branches, but can't figure out how to secure the string to the top of the rock wall.

Am I making this too complicated? Is the solution to let the clematis just grow another foot and a half and just train it onto the cotinus?
