Dioscorea elephantipes question

Hi -

My D. elephantipes has usually started its vines by this time...but, this year it is just sitting there. Granted, we had a very hot summer, but I was wondering if others are having a similar experience...?

I checked the base and roots, and the roots seem fine. In fact, it is pretty root bound in its pot right now (these guys grow roots at an unbelievable rate, IMO). There is a slight give at a small area of the base under the bark, but I think that has always been there...and I am not really seeing any signs of rot.

Do these guys mind being a bit root bound? I suppose I could pot it up, but I guess I am being a bit lazy....

    Tom,

Aren't they going into a season of little/no activity? I myself don't grow it, so I'm hoping X, Keith or someone else can chime in.

I would imagine that, if you have generous root room (not over-potted, but not under-, either) you're going to get lots of vines.

Isn't it treated like a tropical when it's in growth?

I know, I'm asking more questions than I'm answering, but why stop, eh?

    Jeff -

Mine usually grows from late summer through winter. Like gangbusters.

I suppose you are right...I should give it a bit more room to grow. Well, off to get a pot, I guess...unless it is dead, then I would rather not get one...

    T,

A good photo-documentary that was - that's a fat root ball - one hadn't seen the other end of a Dioscorea before. I imagine hydrating it, gently at first, will give you some green in two weeks or less.

It's in a sunny, warm spot?

And a fine layer of top dressing will even make it groove even more - you can look it up.

Mine is in full growth mode now, it started about 3 weeks ago. Being rootbound would slow down growth but not delay it, I don't think.

Be careful that it doesn't dry out completely, otherwise I wouldn't worry about it yet. A little water won't hurt.

I would imagine it should get going any day now, with the cooler nights and shorter days we are having. Once it starts, growth is very fast. Hopefully the transplant doesn't set it back but it looks like all the roots are intact.

Jeff - Dioscorea is one of those few plants that truly is a summer dormant species. Unlike other vining species, it should not be treated like a tropical plant while in growth. Warm, not hot, days and cooler nights are needed for growth.

I am wondering if I may have let it dry out too much this summer...we'll see soon if it is going to make a comeback. Mine is usually vining pretty seriously by now, too, which is why I am concerned.

On a different subject, my Tylecodon paniculatus is also doing nothing right now...so maybe the heat set me back a bit with these guys.

"And a fine layer of top dressing will even make it groove even more - you can look it up."...would you elaborate, please?

I have 2, one has been growing like a weed sine May, the vine has climbed up off the side deck, into the mulberry tree and up to the power lines! It was purchased in April, dormant. I couldn't resist. The other I've had for several years, it had a wonderful vine when hurricane Ike hit and it was under 4' of salt water for over 24 hours. It took a couple of weeks to find it under the debris. Sent out a new vine about a month later, in November! Then we had a freeze, thought it was lost, it started to vine 2 weeks ago.

The one that has been through so much is in a pot barely bigger than it, I was planning to repot it but like you said that thing grows roots like nothing I've seen. I can't get it up, haven't tried digging it out, it seems happy so so am I.
    Tally HO!
