Red Mulberry seedling

I know..I know

It will make tons of seeds and a big mess..

But it's coming up in a part of the forest I am preparing to clear of small trees so it won't be disturbing anything or making a mess on a lawn or walkway.

The leaves were just so fascinating and struck a memory but I couldn't remember the name of the plant.

Finally I just googled lobed leaves and found a photo to match what I have.

..or what I may not have if the deer whack it back again.

It's only about 2' tall and a now you see it now you don't kind of plant because the deer keep browsing.

I think I will proceed to clear that area and throw up a ring of tomato cages around this seedling for the winter and see what happens in spring.

Oh goodie..an outdoor project. I'm so tired of unpacking and repacking stuff I don't need but didn't want to toss out before I moved.

They are good plants, they just need management in tight quarters. The birds will love you for leaving it be and by this time next year it will be big enough that the deer will most likely leave it alone. Hopefully it will have tasty berries that you can also enjoy (some do, some don't).

Oh darn (I think). Examining the dead broken down tree that these sprigs are coming up amongst it would appear they are not seedlings but sprouts from a really old mulberry root system.
The bark matches what is described.
Wondering now if I should cut down the dead tree to maybe a two foot stump because it is really unsightly, broken half way up and twigs,small branches filling the center of the cluster where these root sprouts are coming from.

Should I wait to fuss with it until spring so there's no water/moisture/freeze getting to the sprouts?
