First Clematis

I'm ready to make the plunge. I've never grown clematis, but after researching varieties, I've decided on Betty Corning and Polish Spirit. The Betty will be climbing an old dead tree trunk (along with a Cl. 4th of July rose) in full, baking, high desert sun. The Polish Spirits (two) will get 6 hours of western sun. Again, baking, but not as long as Betty will get. Am I barking up the wrong tree, so to speak, in hoping these will do well in this high desert climate? 90's and dry during the day, 50's at night. Thanks for any input.
