Propagating Nootka Cypress

I tried grafting 15 this morning. I couldn't find much if any cambium, ....Each cut was all solid wood.

The scions were very fresh so I don't know what I'm battling against. I now have seen that Dirr & Heuser describe cuttings of Nootka coming in at 75% in their latest 'manual'. If I would have known that I wouldn't have even messed with grafting.

What do you guys have to say about grafting these? I used Juniper scopulorum rootstock but I know Thuja orientalis, Thuja occidentalis and even know of a guy with 20 years of success using Microbiota decussata for understock... The cambium on the Juniper was super easy to find.

Later,

Dax
