Typical wilt. Cutting it back is all you can do. It will most likely recover.

That's what I was hoping you (or someone) would say. It's such an eyesore right now that I have no problem chopping it back!

I agree that it looks like wilt. Another possibility may be overwatering and resulting crown rot. Either way, cut it back and also check to make sure you are not watering it too much!

No, definitely am not overwatering it. Which means it was probably wilt.

I chopped it back right after I posted last night.

Of course, now it's pouring rain and looks like it's going to for the next week. I have everything in well draining soil, so I shouldn't be worried, right? (Although I am wondering if my bulbs are going to rot over the winter, but that's a question for another forum. :0P )

No, your bulbs aren't going to rot unless they are only borderline hardy here in the first place. I have hundreds of daffodils, dozens of tulips, crocus, lilies, hyacinths, squill, dwarf iris and many other bulbs too. Bulbs do very well here. Except some tulips decline after a few years, however, I have not had that happen.

So, it poured all day (as I'm sure you know), and all the drainage saucers under my clematis are completely full. Sigh. What a pain.

Violetta, make sure you dump the water out of the saucers. I personally don't use them and think that they may not be helping your clematis since they are keeping the soil in the bottom of the pots too wet. Send that rain my way please!!!

I don't use saucers on any of my potted plants on my deck or patio. In fact, I use pot feed or other risers to get the pots up off the cement/wood so that they drain freely.

Saucers trap too much moisture and can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Would love to send you this rain. 2" or so in a week. More on the way. NOT READY!!!!! Have tons of gardening still to do.

Yeah, I decided to ditch the saucers when I saw how quickly they filled up yesterday. Maybe I'll put them back over the summer. Maybe not. We'll see.

BorS, I use pot feet also. No saucers for me. For those pots that do have attached saucers, I drill holes in them to allow the water to drain.
