A wee setback!

Thank goodness I checked in for a third time with my major client before starting to dig two rather large gardens on their property which was on the slate for tomorrow. The economy has just side-whacked them and my plans for their gardens have been reduced to just maintenance.

I am so happy that the work I did last year will really have an impact on their properties as they are my "showpieces"for new clients.Four hundred bulbs are just beginning to make an appearance. I'm up to the challange and am determined to bring joy to their gardens on a shoestring budget. Any ideas are most welcome.

I will be left "holding the bag" on a few orders but in no way will be facing what they will have to bear.

Anyone else feeling the pinch?

Martha

I am sorry you are having to cut back as a consequence of their reduced circumstances. But I am glad that the bulbs will make a great show. I hope you will post pics. We aren't doing to badly...thank goodness. c

Martha, got my fingers crossed for you, hopefully the economy will turn around soon.
The turn in the economy hasn't effected us but know quite a few that have been hit hard. Being retired with our pensions, savings, secure makes a big difference. We haven't lost anything so far, touch wood.

Pension? How fortunate, Annette. The word is not in my vocabulary. My 15 years of savings for my retirement has been hit hard.

My church is having a "Tea Party" to protest what's happening with our Government. I just may go. I'm not sure which sign I'll bring.

    1. We've had enough. Stop rewarding failure.
    2. Stop Giving to Charity: Just Send it to Washington
    3. You can't fix stupid but you can vote them out.
    4. Give another country our consitution, we don't use it anymore.
    5. Can We Lay Off Congress?
    6. O Dow, Where Art Thou

Stepping off the soap box now.

I sure hope things get better for you Martha.

Martha, I am so sorry. I think what I said may have dropped off your conversational post. I have a plaque that reads "Lord, please keep Your arm around my shoulders and Your hand over my mouth. Amen." I need to remember that :-)

I'm not usually a political person but the economy has my Irish up.

Please post pictures. I'm anxious to see your artistic works.

Mora, that is what I do. Create gardens for people on a shoestring. This year I've had problems because folks want big gardens who HAD big money - they want the same gardens they may have had last year, same amount of plants, super fancy, same amount of hiring out but they don't want to pay for it. This has been my frustration.
I've decided to change what I offer and am making a website so I can refer clients to exactly what I can do for them: TEACH them to do it themselves. Of course they can't do hardscape necessarily. I can try and work within budget but my last client ended up being very rude to me because I can not make her dream garden happen for her - a minimum $50,000 job for $2,000 she has. I think having the website can help folks see what I have to offer within their budget and how they CAN have what they want - by doing it themselves.
Do you do any gardens for gardeners?
I find it is my biggest personal reward to do gardens for people who want to learn not just to magically have done.

Edna, you crack me up, lol, I've been hearing a lot on the news about tea parties. You never need to hold back for me.

GGG, I feel exactly the same way as you do. I prefer to work with people who love their gardens and just need an extra hand now and again. I learn so much from them and the chatter makes for an enjoyable few hours.
The exception was this one project for friends who just have too much on their plate to enjoy the gardening experience so they hired me and gave me free range to do as I would if it were mine.
They were as heartbroken as as I when they told me of their circumstances. I am going to have to be clever with replacing annual beds with seeds, nasturtiums will be playing a big role in former pansy and snapdragon places.
I am appalled that people were rude to you, I hope you give them a miss in the future. I had a friend call to ask me if I would take on the garden of a lady who she knew...a beautiful little cottage garden but when she mentioned that this lady had gone through two gardeners already, I declined. Life is too short.M
