need computer help!

Anyone who knows about computers please help. I think I got a virus yesterday because my virus protection popped up and started listing things. I closed the internet and restarted my computer to try to stop it, then did a complete scan to check and it didn't find anything. BUT when I went back online it would pop up a website every time I typed in a new website. I would have to x out of that one to see the one I wanted to. I shut it down for the night and when I turned it on in the morning, it did a scan automatically then only my background was showing, no icons, no bar at the bottom with the clock and start button. I shut it down and went to work and I am home now and the same thing happened...I saw nothing but the background so I hit ctrl alt delete and managed to get online but I would like tho fix the problem. Thanks in advance for any advice how to fix this.

I am not a computer person. We either invite our guests to take a look or take the computer to the computer guy. When we first got the computer, we had 8 kids (and their friends) downloading music & videos & in chat rooms, etc. My daughter kept saying it wasn't her fault but when she moved out & wasn't on it, it didn't happen anymore. I am never smart enough to do a back-up & always end up losing stuff I don't want to. How's the weather? Get it fixed before it gets bad & you get stuck inside.

Shawn, it sounds more like spyware rather than a virus. Do you have a good spyware program ? If not, Obit has a free one. Just google obit.com. Hope this helps.

It does sound like spyware. Christmas is a big time for viruses.

3 things I use and all are free and at download.com make sure it is the free ones. IE most downloaded.

AVG antivirus
adaware spyware remover
Zone alarm firewall

These 3 are much better than any one all in one pay program.
I have done networks and computer since DOS. These will rid and stop computer Trojans, spyware, viruses, hackers and 99.9% of the external computer programs from internet access.. Nothing can protect from human error but restore points.

Shawn, I hope you are able to clean your computer soon using the tools Jim listed. It's a pain when you can't use your computer :-(

Thank you all. I am on the laptop now and the problem is on my desktop. When I messed around with it yesterday my antivirus found and deleted a few things and asked me to restart, and when I did that all my icons and stuff reappeared. But the popup thing was still happening so I think I will download some of the things you listed and hopefully it will be back to normal. Thanks.

It sounds like AntiVirus 2009. Do you get a shield popping up telling you that a threat was found? If so, this is rogue malware. Whatever you do, don't pay the extortionists anything!

I recommend Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for free:
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

I also use SuperAntiSpyware, also free:
Super Antispyware

After downloading and installing both applications, be sure to update before running the scan. You can safely remove anything that is found. I think these two products are the best out there right now.
