Over potting ?...

Well on May 23rd of this year I planted two identical Lisbon lemon seedlings. One was planted in the Red 5 Gal container only half filled with soil. Soil used was Miracle grow. Second was planted in a 15 Gal container filled nearly full will soil from my yard (heavy clay & sand included). As you can see the seedling in the 15 Gal container is 4 times the size of the seedling in the 5 Gal. I have never had a problem with large containers and don't see where anyone would unless they really over water them.

Also here is a Bearss lemon I potted up from a 3 Gal to 15 Gal. This tree was almost dead when I bought it from Lowes, all yellow leaves and no new growth at all...

Laaz... Nice! Do you use SuperThrive? I think your poopers is looking for a threat...LOL..Dale

Lol hey Dale. Never used ST, just a good fertilization program. Athena guards the citrus from the birds & squirrels. So far this year 3 birds & 1 squirrel.

be-youtiful. Makes me feel like planting some of my ton of really healthy FD seedlings into some bigger pots.

Laaz, your Rott is gorgeous..Male or female? What's his name?
Dale, why would you ask Laaz if he uses ST when you KNOW the answer already? Toni

Laaz, does the dog bite people from Colorado when they visit? The Lisbon lemon in the 15-gallon container, what was the precentage of soil and sand? Also, how long has it been growing in the larger container? Soil tends to compact more and more with each irrigation. Lastly how heavy is the container? Looks like a nice neighborhood Laaz! - Millet

Hi Toni Her name is Athena & a female. I have a male as well, but can not let him out in the front yard as he will take off & it take hours to track him down.

Hi Millet. No she doesn't bite people for CO Hehe... The Lisbon in the 15 Gal is compact as hell. I don't know the ratio as I took it from the back yard, but it is heavy as hell. It is slow draining but never gets watered except for rain as is the case with the 5 Gal in MG. Both have only been fertilized only with Osmocote to keep the experiment fair. I thought for sure the 15 Gal plant would suffer or die, but as you see it is thriving in poor soil & a large container. They were both the exact same size when I potted them May 23, 2005.

What can I say. Time is the true test. You evidently get a LOT MORE rain than we do here in the mile high city. Take care and thanks for the post.- Millet

Yeah Millet we get a nice rain about 3 pm every day in the summer...

Hey Laaz, did you make it up to Stan's today?
This has been the best year yet for my citrus. The rains really have helped. I've also fertilized aggresively with fish emulsion. I've notice that after "overpotting" my trees that they tend to "rest" until they find the sides of the pot.
Those are some good looking trees. If I had a Greek goddess like that guarding my grove, I would not worry about plant rustlers. My two and four year olds combined don't weigh as much as that puppy.
What is your largest potted citrus?
You grow some in the ground as well on trifoliate. What is your largest inground tree?
    Just wonderin'
    Scott

Hey Scott. I'm going up to Stans next Sunday. Your welcome to ride along if you want. My largest potted is about 6 ft. My largest in ground is also about 6 Ft as I just bought this house last year & am building my citrus as I go. I have in ground now, Satsuma, Navel, Meyers, Ponkan, Ruby Red, Duncan, Bearss Lime, Key Lime, Sanbokan Lemon, and a few others as well. Stan has some 15 ft trees that have been growing forever with killer crops.

Variegated Sungold (Lisbon lemon). Not pink fleshed, but much more productive than the Eureka. Also a yellow varigation not white. Thanks to Eddie.

Laaz, Athena, is a beauty..Do you breed them or are they spayed and neutered? Before getting Sam (English Mastiff) we had a rott named Cujo..(male)
They have great dispositions, and will only attack if they sense their people are going to be hurt by someone.
Your trees look good, too. It's good Athena prefers meat to fruit..I caught Sam munching on my Ostrige ferns last wk. And I blamed it on the squirrels..lol..Toni

I plan on breeding them. Athena is just over a year old & Brutus (My male) is 9 months old. Rotts are great dogs & very loyal. For some reason they always get the "bad dog" reputation.

Yep, they talk about Rotts, Dob's, Pit's, and G.Shephards. It depends on how a dog is treated and raised..If someone beats their dog, locks him/her up when ppl come over, that dog will be mean..I don't care what type of dog it is. If it's treated violently, it'll turn out bad, including attaching the owner. Which they then desearve. When I lived in Chicago, I called the Animal Control people on a family who lived next door..that poor shephard was kept outside 7/24 12 months out of the yr..They fed him using paper plates, the yard was filled w/those plates. AC came over and took the dog, These same ppl beat their kids..I called the police one night when the father was whipping the kid, but it didn't help. This poor kid was screaming and pleading. Toni

Got up this morning and found my Meyer lemon tree full (17 I counted so far) of new born tree frogs, Great for insect control.

Thats the way to do it Laaz! They call the larvae of swallowtail butterflies "orange dogs" I don't think that even 17 of them could tackle THAT orange(and black) dog.

Laaz..If Poopers gos by that tree she going to think she has fleas...Dale
