A grafting question

Greetings all

I am looking for some opinions on a practice that strikes me potentially problematic, Working at a garden center part time i see a lot of poor grafting and other problems but the practice of grafting Picea pungens 'Bakeri' onto Picea abies seems unwise at best and i have seen other small to dwarf culivars grafted onto the same rootstock. A lot of these smaller forms seem to exhibit faster than normal growth (bakeri growing 12-16" per season seems like a lot to me) and i have to wonder how much being stuck on such a fast growing rootstock will affect their overall growth habit in the long run.

I don't know how widespread the practice is and have been able to find little information on the subject so any insight from mind more learned than mine would be greatly appreciated.

Mark
