I save some heads every yr. I start a few in flats and put the rest out with my wildflowers and they have a good result..

You shouldn't have any problems. All I've grown from saved seed have come true.

Kat, the only thing I have found to be different is the millet heads are smaller both in over all length and circumference, they also do not dry as well either. I am not sure if you could tell with the pics I sent you.

Some of the foliage is not as dark either. This year I did spring for 1,000 seed for $121. I have 1/2 of the millet sold already 5 for $3 to wholesalers that pick it up at the farm.

Bryan, thanks for the info. I did not receive any pics from you, please resend if you dont mind. The millet seed is SO expensive that I thought this year I would go for the field grown seed and see what happens. The smaller heads might actually work better for me but if the florists around here are interested in it, I will grow the pure seed next year. Thanks again. Kat

Kat, I sent you those pics.

To save seed wait until the millet head pollens out (yellow) and the pollen falls off. Pick soon after because the birds love them.

I save the seed on mine and they are usable for sure. I'm sure there is some difference in size on some, as Bryan noted, but for mixing in with bouquets they do great. Also in case anyone doesn't know, they love bottom heat for germination. I used to start them in my sun porch until I built a hot bed in my unheated greenhouse. After just 3 days in the hot bed, it looks like sod!
