Thanks Tracy - I'm looking specifically for ceiling 'flush mount', like what you had in the picture above. I'm sorry to hear it isn't working well...we want the open look without a rangehood coming down. I know that Best makes a pretty large flush-mount called Cirrus - since the link above doesn't connect for me (just goes to Best's main page), is that the one you are getting? The picture is of my old flush mount. The link I gave you has the new flush mount that we are getting. It should work great and will be installed as soon as my contractor can get in my attic without fainting from the heat.

Hi Remarkable1 What did you end up with your remodel? Hood type? We are facing the same issue you had and I am just wondering what happened. Thank-you.

My husband actually ended up designing the system and purchasing the components. Our contractor installed it. Because of the distance between the cooktop and the vent, we felt that an almost-industrial-strength blower was the best choice to insure adequate venting (I think he said it was like 700 cfm or whatever). It is mounted in the existing duct work at the end, so it basically vents right outside. It is really quiet when in use, much quieter than you would expect for a fan of that strength.

Also we had the electrical done when the floor was torn up, so it's trenched underneath - the control dial is mounted directly on my island, just below the cooktop. That is a false drawer front as we have a drawer microwave on that corner, opening to the right (short end of island). The control knob is that black dot next to the drawer pull.

While we hadn't planned on doing it this way, the inevitable contractor 'delays' worked in our favor for thinking about and designing this system to solve our particular problem.

Since it's not to code (distance between the cooktop and the ceiling vent), were we to sell, the next owner can easily have a standard-style ceiling mounted hood installed.

I love the unobstructed view, since we had lived so long with a very obstructed view, but I certainly understand those who love a more traditional range hood approach.

Vent idea is great and works for what you wanted! Nice kitchen. We will need to remodel according to code so will need either a hood or downdraft cooktop. Thanks for responding and sending photos and information. It is always nice to see the "after" photos!
