It's WAY late for Fall planting here! We've had quite a few good freezes already, in the teens, and several snowstorms, but then we get a Pineapple Express (warm wet rain from Hawaii) and it all thaws out again. Lazy me still has one bag of tulips from Costco that isn't in (it didn't cost much, if I don't get around to it and end up throwing them away, no big deal), and I haven't really done much fall cleanup yet. I'll try for this weekend, if the ground isn't frozen solid then.

Jeanne - too funny! We had 5 days below freezing in Oct. - in fact, I lost my dahlias on 10/4 - but not the rest! It snowed last Sunday, didn't stick, but the rain is nonstop...we're finishing up 4 new big raised beds, w/hardware cloth for tulips and alliums...I plan to use the beds later in the summer for other items. Hopefully the beds will be done and I can plant this weekend...should be easy..fill the beds halfway, plant and cover!

I just started my inground bulb planting today ! Soil was a little wet but we have another storm due in on Sunday. Normally I am just finishing up at this time! We have now broken all official records for rainfall in November and it is only half over! I did get the dutch iris and blue anemones in earlier this week, as well as some hardy winter glads. Last years yellow dutch iris are up over 2 feet tall so guess we wil be having plenty of them this next spring! Last year I planted yellow, and a mix that was mostly yellow. This year I planted 250 blue, and some Rosario( lavendar pink), and Eye of the Tiger. I also planted about 200 blue Mr Fokker Anemones for spring, and have a Costco bag of white and red ones to plant.

So only 8 crates of tulips left to plant and one of late daffodil varieties! yikes!

Lizalily - I hope you were able to work this weekend! We got 2500 tulips, 800 dutch iris, 400 purple sensation alliums planted, but I ran out of space for the drumstick alluims and eremurus. So, we need to convert an annual bed to a bulb/annual bed...as soon as we can get into it to work it and plant! Its supposed to start snowing! But the new raised beds look great...whew..still have the bearded iris to replant that were where the raised beds are!

But, I'm also doing holiday wreaths...so, will try to get these done! I did get a wreath maker and love it already!

Wendy, Here I sit with one storm after another. It isn't quite freezing yet but I bet you have snow blowing real soon. I noticed another inch and a half in the rainguage since we broke all records for November a week ago...but it will be over 2" by morning unless it turns to snow here. I may be planting tulips in February if this doesn't let up soon! You know, I could go out and shovel "soup' but neither the soil or the bulbs will like me if I do! I try to keep telling myself that if I get them in by new years day it will still be ok...if I just knew that I could do them by then and we don't have a weeks-long freeze up. Gee, I sound like some kind of wimp to those mid westerners I bet! It is hard working in the garden when there are tree limbs flying over head also,that is my excuse and I Am sticking to it!

I'm just over the Canadian border from you, close enough that we've been hit by the same weather and are in the same boat. ( Or maybe we should be building boats... ) "Soup" is sure the appropriate word. Let's hope we both finish getting our tulips in before Christmas!

The Midwesterners *are* laughing at you - but just a little. :))

Have you ever put straw or leaves down about 6" thick to prevent the soil from freezing early on? You might consider it with all those bulbs. Either one will work on top of the soil and break down so it's beneficial.

Tulips also like horse manure, and if you can get your hands on some with straw bedding, your problems will be over. I think tulips are the only thing -- daffodils would hate the manure.

Greetings from the East Coast. It has been unseasonally warm out here. We also have had a lot of rain. All of my fall planting has alrealy been done. I have noticed that the late planting of dutch iris are all sprouting. I hope this doesn't affect them for next spring. It also looks like my plantings of Purple Sensation Allium are also peaking thru. Usually by this time the ground is frozen solid. This weather certainly is bizarre. Heidi
