Bargain Deal!

Stopped by a certain BBS to return an item we didn't end up needing and the hubby insisted we go out through the garden center. That was his first mistake! His second mistake was allowing me to carouse the bargain rack! Look what I found! I got it out the door with taxes for $3.50! Of course it has the stupid glues rocks on the top, the reason for which I will never understand, an no drain hole in the pot. How exactly does one remove the glued rocks with minimal damage to the pot and plants?

This I know is Crassula Ovata but is it 'Gollum', 'Trumpet' or 'ET's Fingers'? Is there a difference between them? Can someone teach me the difference if there is one?

Clearly this is etoliated but what is it? Echeveria?

Stapelia?

Whatever it is it looks like it might flower!

Kalanchoe?

In conclusion I clearly have some work to do but a good buy overall!

Glued rocks... Remove them all from the no drain bowl and pry them and chip em away In a nut shell they use the glued rocks to hold the plants in place during shipping Basically it's a semi firm type epoxy the rocks can sometimes break away for removal in pieces Work the removal from bottom to save as much root and plant as you can.

Pic 1 & 2. isn't Gollum as Gollum foliage tends to be shorter and inner foliage opens more than what is shown.

pic 3 Huernia might be procumbus... Shows more of a pup maybe to me than a flowering but very ready to be out of that dish disaster.

pic 5 Kalanchoe? Yes..... Flap Jacks would be my guess

You have a good husband. I start at the bargain rack. It has become a race for my son and I when we enter the store. Off to work now. Outstanding buy. You are getting a great collection going. I bought the last cacti at Lowe's and asked the vendor to please bring some more.

I agree with mrlike2u that the growth on the huernia is a new stem, not a bud. I'd remove the whole thing from the bowl and break away the rocks in small sections. They should break apart fairly easily.

Yes, it is a 'Gollum', perhaps 'Skinny Fingers', sometimes called E.T.'s fingers, but etiolation makes that ID problematic. Yes, Echeveria, but etiolation makes this one hard to pin down too. The large leafed plant is likely Kalanchoe luciae. I don't grow stinkers, but it will be easier to identify when it flowers.

    'I don't grow stinkers....'

And here I thought you were a full-range succulentist.

    ;-)

    Well, you cant't grow everything!

    Why not! I'm sure trying!

Alright I have separated them all. I managed to get them all out with no damage at all! Well, not entirely. The Echeveria-like plant lost a few leaves. What surprised me was how healthy the roots looked considering the conditions they were in. It might as well have been a bog underneath the glued rocks!

I ended up with 4 separate plants! What's the ID on this? ET finger?

This one's roots were pretty shallow. I will take shallow over rotten though!

What in the heck is this and what in the heck should I do with the poor etoliated thing? Should I chop it's head off or wait until the spring to do anything?

That was a good deal! I almost picked up one of those mixed pot -- most likely at the same type of BBS -- for the pot. If it would have had plants I was more interested in (like a member of the Stap. family) I would have done it.

I, too, am going with Flapjacks on your Kalanchoe suspect.

I also agree that you have a wonderful husband - that HE insisted on going to the garden center! The blasphemy that would be in my home! Ha! My husband usually tries to keep me AWAY from the garden center, cuz he knows he'll either never get me out of there, or we'll end up going home with $50 worth of new babies. (I was good the other night, I only bought about $25 worth.)

Heck, forget the bargain plants - you got a good find on getting your husband! :)
