Young citrus trees eaten by sheep!

I planted a dozen lemon and lime trees a month ago. Yesterday some lambs got into the orchard and went straight for the new citrus trees, and ate off all the leaves. Will the trees be able to be revived, or will I have to dig them out and plant again?

I don't suppose it matters now; but in my experience goats eat citrus, but sheep do not. Are you sure they were lambs?

Anyway, I expect the trees will recover, if you treat them well.

Thanks for that John. Yes they were definitely lambs from the paddock next to the orchard. They were still in the orchard when I discovered them this morning, having got through an open gate overnight. They went straight for the tangerines, lemons, limes and oranges, and nibbled all the leaves off.

I could use those in my yard to eat all the weeds!!!

Good luck on the recovery for them..

    Cute little buggers though, right?

Ham, your trees should push out new flush. It might take a bit since we're in winter (if you're in this part of the northern hemisphere), but citrus are pretty tough, and hopefully all your trees should spring back for you.

I have a friend with 3 goats she said I could use to clear my yard. I will have to protect all my small trees she said they eat what people want the most FIRST.

I am assuming that NZ = new zealand and your trees should recover quickly.

    Good luck

I had a nice little herd of Alpine/Saanen goats at my lemon farm; but I finally had to get rid of them; because it seems their absolute favorite food is Meyer lemon trees. They never bothered any of the other citrus varieties; but no matter what I did, I absolutely could not keep them out of my lemons. Now I have sheep (hair sheep, actually... too warm for wool sheep); they eat the grass between my rows, but not the lemon trees.

New Zealand is now in mid Summer; so I suspect the trees will flush again soon. BTW I hate sheep!! When I was a child I wanted cherry trees; saved up my money and bought 6 trees for the family garden. My Brother like sheep; so my Father bought him two... they immediately ate my cherry trees! I put fences around them; and they came back... only to have the sheep knock down the fences and eat them again... they did not recover the second time; and for that and more, I hate sheep ..

If one creature has the knowledge to get to a tree that another creature cannot protect, then I would suggest that the creature who got to consume its desire is the cleverer.
