wild plums like to thicket. They like brackish or moist soils and I've heard varying things about fruit. Birds and animals love them. My friend recently said he'd had some that were delicious, but that it varies from tree to tree. They tend to be fairly small, and are recommended for jams and jellies.
I would like some in my own garden because I have an area that ponds when it rains, although it drains well in a day. These would be perfect in a more "wild" situation such as that.

Interesting... I have a spot like that but I wonder if it is too close to the road (road salt) and the cornfield (which gets sprayed).

very interesting topic. Check out Fedco's website about plums and the wild plums being good pollinators for hybrids or eurpoean plums (can't remember which ones). As I now have mostly plum trees in my yard, I am thinking of integrating a few wild just for the pollination factor.

Are they yellow or purple? I have had both, and both called 'wild'. Maybe the purple one was just de-hybridized (is that a word??) Both are yummy, and the yellow makes great jelly/jam. Wish I was a NYer!!! I have friends in Rochester - i wonder if they are available to them......
