I would enjoy the wild blackberries where they are, and plant a named cultivar in your chosen spot. One of the erect blackberries will be easier to maintain into an edible hedge. Be sure to pick one resistant to disease since you are near wild blackberries.

I have had good luck with Triple Crown (a semi-erect), and Arapaho (fully erect). The Triple Crown really is as good as they say, but all the june bugs agree. The Arapaho was relatively unmolested by pests; as a result it gave me the best yields even though it set less fruit.

Also, no thorns!

I have also been enjoying the wild blackberries. With all the rain we've had this year, it's a great crop.

We did this two years ago. There were a lot of wild bb everywhere, but not close to the house/garden area. In summer, we marked the plants that looked good/had fruit on. In the fall we went and dug them out and planted them in row. First year they did not produce much and what fruit we got was very sour. They also got serious damage by Japanese Beatle. I cut them down to 1ft at the end of first season and cut to the ground some that 'escaped' from the bed. Second year -- they are doing marvelous, lots of large and sweet berries. I guess they benefited from some fertilization and better location/sun exposure. They do taste different than the store bought, but I guess you know that from tasting your wild bb.

Yes, they are pretty thorny, I have to wear gloves and long sleeves to collect. But I was able to get a lot of berries and enjoyed a lot of vanilla icecream treats.

And people will tell you about the decease, and that you should not plant them too close to non-wild cultivars of other brumbles, etc. So you have to decide on location. They spread a lot, so make sure to keep an eye on it.
