I was under the impression that all purslane was edible but I may be wrong. I tried some once but I didn't like the crunchy yet mucilaginous texture, and sourish taste.

Look on the HortiPlex database from the Gardenweb homesite using the scientific name Portulaca oleracea. There are lots of good pics at several links.

You can also deliberately grow one of the kinds developed for the garden, with leaves that stay off the ground better. When chickens are fed with Purslane, their eggs have a favorable fatty acid profile.

I'm interested in growing PURSLANE in a container in hopes of keeping the flowers clipped to prevent seed dispersal to unwanted sites. I want to grow this for eating and wondered if anyone could suggest a specific variety for my purposes. I see so many varieties: Red, Golden, Garden Purslane.
Any suggestions/advice?

A crunchy, mucilaginous texture and sourish taste is purslane. And it is quite edible. What you are saying is you don't like it, and that's all right. I don't like cerery but it is quite edible.

I eat regular weed purslane as shown in the website below. I don't know about the edibility of showy purslane, but golden purslane is supposed to be good. Regular weedy purslane has inconspicuous flowers.

Hmm, was original question about this purslane or winter purslane (claytonia) that is a different animal.

Look up "purslane" on google images. Purslane is the edible, succulent one.

Then look up "spurge" on google images. Spurge is the poisonous and more wiry looking one.

By all means, look at enough pictures of both to thoroughly convince yourself before eating anything.
