Aka Chicken of the woods -- I can't tell you where they are in Wisconsin, but I agree that they are delicious! They are most commonly found on oaks but can grow on other hardwoods and sometimes occur on conifers. There's some dispute among mushroom experts that I've seen on eating those growing on conifers. One source says to avoid them as they can be toxic. On the other hand, Fungi Perfecti (fungi.com) sells spawn for a related variety of chicken of the woods that specifically prefers conifers (Laetiporus conifericola), and since Fungi Perfecti is Paul "Mr. Mushroom" Stamets' outfit, I trust them to be selling something that is safe to eat. Naturally, some people will be sensitive to any type of mushroom, so nothing is ever guaranteed.

Anyhow, this all means that if you really like chicken of the woods, you might want to consider cultivating some at home to ensure a good supply. Other sources surely exist besides Fungi Perfecti, perhaps even a local Wisconsin source to ensure that the strain is adapted to your conditions.
