I'd also be interested in any comments on how various gooseberry varieties really are. I planted the following this spring, so later this year I hope to be able to comment on at least some:

Trixia
Invicta
Hinnomaki Red
Hinnomaki Yellow
Black Velvet

The first 3 were from Nourse (of 40+ berry plants, only 1 didn't make it) and the last 2 were from RollingRiver (everything was good and you can plant later in the year, since they send potted plants).

Plan to plant this spring:
Jeanne (a new type which seems to have good feedback online)
Poorman
Orus 8 (gooseberry x currant)

"Almost impossible to grow but the berries are large, white and supposedly delicious; I can't get the plant to last that long."

and

"Old cultivar easily propagated so readily available, but pretty ho-hum as far as the berry goes."

Whitman Farms, linked below, is arguably the best source for gooseberries in the US; certainly offers the largest selection - and I've never heard anything other than glowing reports on their plants - and Lucille Whitman's helpfulness.
