Hi Carol, I like your taste.I think your room is charming. The chairs would work with new fabric, one could be a texture and the other a coordinating print, using fabric from one chair as welting on the other and vice versa. Use one of them on the ottoman also. The other thing that leaps out at me is the leaning ladder. While it is a nice peice, I think it clutters up the room. Try removing it and move the chest closer to the door. An area rug would further warm up your space. Artwork over the sofa and you're in good shape. Hope this helps. (a couple fabrics attached just to give you an idea).

About the area rug - what is a good rule of thumb for the right size? I agree with the ladder comment - funny until you said it I did not realize it was bothering me!

Hi Carol, the large geomatric in the first pic is Pinta, color Seafoam from Calico Corners. I can't find the other fabric but if you go to the Calico website and look at the Geometrics fabric collection, you will see numerous coordinating fabrics. As far as the area rug, a rule of thumb I always follow is that at least the front feet of the seating should be on the rug.
