My Picea corner

A lot of participants of this forum are showing us nice garden pics with a lot of colour differences.

I enjoy these pics very much, thank you all for doing this.

Unfortunately we seldom see pics of conifer nurseries.

My intention at my nursery is also to create a nice colour differences pattern.

This is my favorite spot...enjoy!

Wish I had access to plants like that...although I'd be broke then!

Holy Mole that is beautiful! May I ask what are the golden/yellow spruces shown in Pictures #5, #7 and #9?

All great looking cultivars. I expected that to be so. A well run organized business is representative of that.

To bad I don't live close to you Edwin. I would have to work for you. Of course I would never take home a pay check. Just conifers in exchange for work. At least one of everything.

Excellent! Do you sell these on a website or? I'm looking for a new mail order company for this fall/next spring. I have just about every conifer from other places I purchase from, time to spread my wings and go looking for another provider

Fascinating display, and one which prompts many questions:

    1. Irrigation? I don't see signs of a drip system.

    2. Pot mulch. It looks like GeoDisks, or their equivalent on most of them. How do they do?

    3. What is the groundcover?

Could you tell us about how you constructed your layout. The fabric hides what is under the pots. Does all of the overhead irrigation flow out through drain tile and get reused? I also wonder if you have noticed any difference in the evaporation rate from your pots with the coir fiber covers.

A really clean looking nursery. Please tell us more.

Now that's what I call a "Field of Dreams".
    Thanks, Edwin.

Edwin very interesting spruces you have there keep up
the good work thanks for posting the photo.

Hi Edwin and all.Sure looks good! I recognise some of the plants that I bought from French nurseries... Let's see the Pine and Cedrus corners please! T.

Sends a chill down my spine. Simply amazing.

I struggle to keep a specimen looking even almost as good as when I bought it and here are ranks and ranks of pristine, large, needle perfect conifers.

    Surely magic.

A couple more questions to add to my list:

    4. What's the composition of the potting mix?

    5. Ferts schedule?

WOW! That is incredible! Fantastic! I would get as much joy out of that as I would Palm nursery. I know, I'm a bit bipolar that way. I love my tropicals, but I also love my conifers just as much. Hence why I have a tropical garden for summer in the back, and a small conifer winter garden up front. Well, Not as small anymore. It seems its ever expanding. So, do you sell them on a website? Where is your place located? I might have to take a road trip! ;-)

Are those yellow ones in pic 6 Picea Orentalis Skylands?

Thanks so much for sharing your great place and awesome photos!!!

Picture #1 is like looking at a conifer fractal.

What are the golden specimens in pic #7?

    This is waaaaay beyond me.

But I'm glad to see a lot of staking going on -- something that seems too often to be lacking from the advice offered on this forum.

Jaro- staking while in a pot is one thing (early training, ease of transport, some protection when Edwin stumbles around after too many beers) but staking once in the ground is quite another. Not that it's never done.

The closest thing to conifer porn?

It's a magnificient nursery setting Edwin and the time, effort and labor of love is strongly evident.

Wish your place was an hour away, then I could alternate trips between yours and Coenosium Gardens!

That looks absolutely fantastic! Thank you Edwin.

WOW! Incredible and I know anyone would be pleased to get a conifer from you.

OMG! These pictures shows why I admire the conifers. So many textures and colors and there are only spruces! I would spend there some time sure within your pinetum. Great! Abeies or pinetum sector?

Well guys, many thanks for your nice comments to these pics, I really appreciate this!
Let me try to answers the quiestions:

Ken, This area is 10 years old and the walkways wouldn't be cleaned by a vacuum cleaner.
The thing is that we always started with a very clean field and most of the time it will be clean then the rest of the year, otherwise we will sweep the dirt away every 2 weeks.
The weed mat is made of cocos which will do it's work for 2 years.

dietsjm, the spruces names at your mentioned pics are:
#5 Picea omorika 'White Tips', in the U.S. as 'White Tops'.
    #7 Picea omorika 'Aurea'
    #9 Picea abies 'Dablice'

ricksample, I hope you've big wings and a great condtion because you've to fly all the way to The Netherlands ;0)
My nursery website is edwinsmitsconifers dot com

Donn, 1.the irrigation is overhead via sprinklers.
    2. the potmulch is a cocos mat which works very fine because it covers the pot against weeds and moss for 95%, I've to give less water because of less evaporation and it looks nicely uniform.
    3. The groundcover is made of a woven synthetic cloth that avoid bore rooting growth.
4.The pottingmix is a mixture of different types of peat, added with pumice and clay.
    5. I've no ferts schedule, there's a controlled coated fertilizer which is also added at the pottingmix.
Because of it's coating, it will come free bit by bit during the growing season.

baxz5oh, the layout construction is simple, the underground is a white sand bed which will avoid that all will freeze up.
The gradient of the beds are 2% and in the middle of 2 beds there's a pvc gutter for the water drainage which come's out at a water basin for reusing.
Indeed, there's a huge difference in evaporation between plants in pot with and without a cocos mat.
Because of this pot cover, there's less evaporation so also the water giving is less.

novaplantguy, unfortunately I've to tell you the same as I told to ricksample, my nursery isn't in the U.S., it's in The Netherlands...so if you want to visit me it will not only be road trip, you also have to go overseas ;0)
Indeed, the yellow one's in pic #6 are Picea orientalis 'Skylands'.

severnside, the one's at pic #7 are Picea omorika 'Aurea'.
For you my nursery isn't that far away ;0)

Conifer, has mail order been successfully executed to UK collectors? I need to visit Bluespruce's garden first which is less than 2 hour away. That will be mind blowing and I'll see how I feel about a longer pilgrimage after that. What you have to remember is that for newbs (well me) it can be a little overloading as a lot of stuff is still unfamiliar and questions are swirling. I'm getting steadier visiting good smaller nurseries as I can recognise more cultivars, at least by groups in some cases, and can absorb and therefore enjoy it all much better.

Coniferjoy, I have been trying to talk my wife into a vacation in France involving Normandy and Bastogne which I believe you arw not that far from.

Soon as that happens I would love to see your place in person.

Nice photos of what looks like an equally nice business. Good luck!

Severnside, several times per year I ship conifers to the U.K., mostly to the welknown conifer nurseries.
I think it wouldn't be a problem for them that you pick up some plants there.

Toronado, you're more then welcome then.
Bastogne isn't that far away from me, only a couple of hours drive.
Clement lives near Bastogne, you can also visit him to.
Do you bring then your Toronado oldmobile with you? ;0)

Go to Spain and Switzerland as well, or skip France all together, lol.

I'll find one week in August, I have a truck, now all I need is 1500 euros to cover the travel expenses and one or two hundread plants that I saw in your images Edwin! You know that such images can create a lot of hate and envy, don't you? lol!
I'm waitin for the abies section as well, Edwin!

    Best regards,
    Fotis

Fotis, grab your agenda, fill up your truck's gas tank and come to the Netherlands to visit my nursery in August.
If you'll come that early in the season, there's a big chance that you've first choice ;0)

I didn't know that these pics could create this, I was hoping for the oppesite.
    Other pics will come later...

Btw Will (whaas), is your full name Will Haas and are you or your parents from The Netherlands?

    No hate here, just envy.
    Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!
